Bruch's membrane

چکیده
Hyaline bodies may be found in the optic disc and in several parts of the retina as a nonspecific finding (Wolter, 1959). The term drusen ("colloid bodies") is usually reserved for large hyaline bodies of the optic disc and Bruch's membrane. Lorentzen (I966), postulated that drusen of the optic disc had an irregular dominant pattern of inheritance after an examination of the relatives of 49 affected individuals. Drusen of Bruch's membrane are found in several degenerative conditions and systemic diseases and are often a senile manifestation (Duke-Elder, I967). Not infrequently, however, they are the result of a primary hereditary dystrophy, usually transmitted as a regular dominant trait.

Bruch's membrane aging decreases phagocytosis of outer segments by retinal pigment epithelium.
PURPOSE We have shown previously that aging of human Bruch's membrane affects the attachment, survival and gene expression profile of the overlying retinal pigment epithelium (RPE). Herein we determine the effects of Bruch's membrane aging on RPE phagocytosis of rod outer segments. METHODS Explants of human Bruch's membrane were prepared from cadaver donor eyes (aged 9-81years) within 48 h of...
متن کاملMutant Fibulin-3 Causes Proteoglycan Accumulation and Impaired Diffusion Across Bruch's Membrane
Purpose The mutation R345W in EFEMP1 (fibulin-3) causes macular degeneration. This study sought to determine whether proteoglycan content and diffusion across Bruch's membrane are altered in Efemp1ki/ki mice carrying this mutation or in Efemp1-/- mice. Methods Proteoglycans in mouse Bruch's membranes were stained with Cupromeronic Blue (CB). Heparan sulfated proteoglycan (HSPG) and chondroiti...
متن کاملSclera as a surrogate marker for determining AGE-modifications in Bruch's membrane using a Raman spectroscopy-based index of aging.
PURPOSE Raman spectroscopy is an effective probe of advanced glycation end products (AGEs) in Bruch's membrane. However, because it is the outermost layer of the retina, this extracellular matrix is difficult to analyze in vivo with current technology. The sclera shares many compositional characteristics with Bruch's membrane, but it is much easier to access for in vivo Raman analysis. This stu...
متن کاملAccumulation of cholesterol with age in human Bruch's membrane.
PURPOSE To determine the cholesterol composition of normal human Bruch's membrane and choroid as a function of age and retinal location. METHODS Human eyes with grossly normal maculas were preserved <4 hours after donor death. Cryosections of retina and choroid from the macula and temporal equator were stained with filipin to reveal esterified (EC) or unesterified (UC) cholesterol (n = 20, 17...
متن کاملTransplanted and repopulated retinal pigment epithelial cells on damaged Bruch's membrane in rabbits.
AIMS The authors studied how artificially damaged Bruch's membrane influenced growth and differentiation of transplanted embryonic retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells and of host RPE cells in rabbits. METHODS Embryonic RPE cells obtained from pigmented rabbits were transplanted into the subretinal space of adult albino rabbits. The host RPE was removed with a silicone cannula, and Bruch's ...
متن کاملBehavior of human RPE cultured on Bruch's membrane and on necrotic debris.
Degeneration and necrosis of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) is found in several conditions associated with reactive alteration of the cell layer, and is probably involved in the formation of drusen and age-related macular degeneration. In the current study we describe a novel system for culturing human RPE. This system permits evaluation of the effect of necrotic material between the epit...
